Noise Cancelling Headphones…If You’re Not Into Punk Rock

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Here’s an interesting fact: people who listen to music in their headphones too loudly can suffer from permanent hearing loss. Well, that’s not that interesting and many people would agree with that statement. Here’s why it’s an interesting fact: The reason people listen to music too loudly is not necessarily because they love loud music. Rather, it’s because the background sound is too loud and interferes with the music.

So what’s the solution? Music should be enjoyed through headphones (remember, not everyone shares your musical tastes!)…that’s a given. But music doesn’t have to be enjoyed at a massive volume. After all, the true enjoyment of music does not come from the volume but from the quality of the sound.

And how do you get sound quality? One of the ways is to reduce the outside sound you hear. This is done through noise cancelling headphones.

What are noise canceling headphones? The most common type is the kind that goes over your ear and completely encloses it in a shell. There’s soft padding around the sides so it conforms to your head. This type of shape is called circumaural, although you need to know that not all circumaural’s are noise cancelling headphones.

Aside from that shape, noise canceling headphones have another piece of technology that allows them to actually eliminate the background sounds: they use special circuitry, padding insulation, and other technology inside the shell of the part that goes over your ear. This special circuitry works to kill noises from the outside as the sound waves are directed toward you.

The result? Put them on and the world goes quiet. That will allow you to listen to great music at a lower volume and enjoy it more, while keeping others from having to listen to your unique musical tastes.

Because of the insulation and circuitry required to deaden background sounds, the head phones will naturally be bigger in size than the small earbuds you use in your ears. So they may not always be appropriate for travel. If you’re cycling or riding on the bus, you need to hear the background sounds for safety or to know when your stop is. However, if you’re traveling by plane or you want to have a quiet night in a hotel that seems too loud, the noise canceling headphones are just the thing you’ll need for absolute privacy.

If these types of cans are too expensive, you may want to consider circumaural headphones that are not noise cancelling. They’ll still dampen the noise. Or, if you find that they are too big and bulky, you may want to bypass earbuds and instead purchase canalbuds. Earbuds fit right at the end of your ear canal while canalbuds actually go into your ear. They do a better job of deadening external sounds. These are often referred to as noise isolating or passive types of head phones.

Hanging Out at a Punk Rock Concert

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Maya and I went to the Lion’s Club beside Sampalok Lake here in San Pablo on January 2, 2009 to attend the LAKEFEST, a hardcore punk rock concert featuring American punk rock band A Better Hope Foundation and a host of Philippine punk rock bands. Actually, I only went to meet with IVAN BRUN, French comics writer and artist who attended the concert. Ivan is a Komikero, and a long distance friend of mine for a couple of years now. It took the opportunity to interview him about his work (which will be on another video).

Left handed guitars for left handed Rock Chicks

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

In my time, when Punk Rock music was just coming to an end and “New Wave” music was emerging a “part-time” Punk Rocker was called a “Sunday Punk.” Anyone, for that matter who was a “pretend” something was a “Sunday” something. I suppose that term was from my folks era, so that would have been, what 50’s? 60’s? The moral of the story was if you are going to be or live the life of something then you be or live the life. You don’t “dress up” once a week and fake being that thing for a day. You could say “be professional” about whatever it is you are being.

As a musician myself and the designer and creator of Gaskell Guitars (http://www.gaskellguitars.com), a company in Sydney Australia which makes left handed guitars only, not only have I witnessed the continuing evolution and progress of guitar brands such as the mighty Gibson, Fender, Gretsch, Jackson, Rickenbacker, Ibanez, etc over many years now, but I have also experienced the changing views of new generations of people and guitarists about different types of guitars

As a left handed guitarist myself, I have also experienced first hand the feelings of frustration and anger about the choices of left handed guitars being so poor. And somehow lefty guitarists are forced to feel like “second rate citizens” because of it. And it is damned WRONG! Any lefty guitarist who, prior to discovering Gaskell Guitars, will have experienced these same frustrations. All lefty guitarists who have not given up, feel this same thing. We are UNITED in this respect. Incidentally, of late, several major guitar brands have stopped making left handed guitars altogether – how’s that for a slap in the face!

So the point of this story, how do you live the life, if you are 1) a left handed guitarist, and 2) playing a genre of music where a certain type of guitar is representative of the genre yet not available left handed?

Simple answer: with great trouble (and great expense if you go the “custom guitar” route.)

Now here is an additional question: what if you are a … girl?

A “Rock Chick” left handed guitarist, for example.

“Rock Chick” guitarists are like any other guitarist. There are plenty of Rock chicks living the life playing in bands, all around the world. Some are left handed guitarists.

Ok, so you are a Rock chick and you want to play some Rock, Metal, or Grunge, or whatever. Are you going to be playing a sunburst, gay-looking Fender Telecaster? Hope not! (This doesn’t matter whether you are a righty or lefty guitarist, by the way.)

So if that’s your music and you are giving it your all, then how about a Dean or a Jackson, or an Ibanez Super-strat guitar? (they all make them) Maybe, but Strats are pretty boring, really. Not unique to the genre. Plenty of Country and Western players play Strats. Doesn’t quite complete the look.

How about a Les Paul? Well, yes. A Les Paul is a Rock guitar. But even then a Les Paul is a little bit of a compromise for someone who is serious about living the life and being representative of that in their music and in their musical instrument, particularly Metal or any of the darker offshoots of Metal.

Do you want a REAL ROCK GUITAR? A real Rock guitar is a Randy Rhoads V, or perhaps a regular Flying V, or something by BC Rich or Halo, both famous for “extreme” guitars popular with Heavy Metal guitarists.

Now, if you are a Rock Chick and you are in a Metal band and you want a Metal guitar, and you are also a left handed guitarist, what are you going to do?

You are going to seek GASKELL GUITARS.

Gaskell Guitars makes left handed guitars only. We all know that now.

But how about left handed guitars for girls? Yes, yes yes.

We don’t discriminate between male and female at Gaskell Guitars.

We make a Randy Rhoads V guitar in SHOCKING PINK. (http://www.gaskellguitars.com/models/35-guitars/47-koru.html

This is the perfect guitar for any Rock Chick. There is no other guitar more suited. There is nothing “gay” about a pink coloured Heavy Metal guitar. A pink Heavy Metal guitar in the hands of a girl is COOL. On the other hand, there is everything “gay” about a pink Strat, or Tele or Les Paul, etc. Yuck!

Rock Chicks: you will not get left handed guitars easily in shocking pink by other brands. Other brands don’t care about left handed guitarists! Gaskell Guitars has other “extreme” guitars on offer in shocking pink if you don’t fancy the Randy Rhoads style one. (http://www.gaskellguitars.com/models) A shocking pink extreme guitar looks awesome on a Rock chick (It needs to be a proper Rock/Metal guitar that everyone easily associates with that style of music.)

Left handed Rock Chicks, you can really look the part. No one can accuse you of being a “Sunday Rock Chick” when you come out with a Gaskell guitar. Your audience will go mad! If you are a Rock chick, playing left handed guitar in a band, then you should get and play Gaskell guitars!

Progressive Rock Bands That Inspired the World

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Progressive rock appeared in the late 1960s when rock artists wanted to break down the barriers of radio formatted pop and rock and progress this music genre to a place where it could achieve a more sophisticated sound, similar to that of classical music or jazz. Progressive rock is very hard to define in one conclusive way and we have progressive rock bands to prove that. Some of the most important bands of the 70s that defined this rock form did not have the same sound.

Psychedelic music is believed to be the starting point of progressive rock. Some people also believe that bands like The Beatles contributed to the progressive rock movement. However, the two progressive rock bands that most people see as being the first of this new- found genre were King Crimson and Yes. These progressive rock bands appeared at the end of the 1960s and although the first band was attributed to hard progressive rock sub- genre and the second to symphonic rock, they were both catalogued as progressive rock bands, as their sound was unique and more sophisticated. Genesis is yet another rock band that aspired to progressive rock. Their third progressive rock album set things straight for this band. They were a symphonic rock band and thus a progressive rock band.

Great Britain was the first country that started the progressive rock movement, but Italy was not far behind either. Banco Del Mutuo Soccorco and Premiata Forneria Marconi were progressive rock bands that led the way for all rock bands all over Europe to progress and define this rock genre. As far as the progressive rock movement is concerned, these two European countries were the ones that opened all doors and invited all rock bands to evolve and give the world great progressive rock albums. However, Great Britain is still the top promoter of progressive rock bands, with Caravan, another progressive rock band from this country, being the one that defined the third sub- genre of progressive rock: Canterbury. So, at the end of the 1960s, progressive rock bands established three sub- genres: hard prog, symphonic and Canterbury.

The 1970s represented the crowning of progressive rock as a genre and some of the greatest progressive rock albums were released in this decade. Jethro Tull’s “Thick as a brick” or Rush’s “2112” are only two of the most appreciated progressive rock albums released in the 70s. Moreover, this decade brought another ten sub- genres of progressive rock to life, and many progressive rock bands came forth in this period. As if progressive rock was not complicated enough, art folk, classical prog, folk prog, ambient, Rio, pomp prog, jazz fusion, electronic, Zeuhl and krautrock were listed as sub- genres of the 60s rock genre.

In the next two decades, progressive rock did not progress as much as it had up to that moment. In the 80s, it was dethroned by the punk movement and progressive rock bands chose to give birth to another sub- genre: neo progressive. There were few progressive rock albums released in the 80s, some of the most prolific ones being Rush’s “Moving Pictures” or Fate’s Warning’s “No Exit”. Progressive metal rock was also listed as a sub- genre in this period. The 1990s were dominated by the development of metal prog, through Dream Theatre. This decade is mainly characterized by the revival of the progressive scene of the seventies.
